30 in 30: Colored Pencil - Day 1

Day 1
Colored Pencil
~ 9" x 9"

Well, I didn't do so well in the September "30 paintings in 30 days" (I only finished 14 paintings), but I am going to try again in January and see if I can at least beat that.  I hope to go back and finish those 30 watercolor dogs series at some point as well.

Anyways, this time I decided to pick a toned paper and colored pencils for the challenge and put no limit on subject matter.  I've always loved working with colored pencils, but I tend to try to detail too much.  I think I've found a way to fix that by using a paper with more tooth to it.  So far I am happy with the amount of texture and the way the pencils work on it.  Although I am eating through the pencils much faster than I had intended.

  2. You have my attention, are you on a sanded type paper. I love color pencil as well, but am way to slow to do one a day unless it is ACEO size.

    1. Thank you! I am actually drawing on some scrap butcher paper that I found haha. It's not even art paper at all that I am aware of. It has a very fibrous texture unlike most papers. I wish I knew where it came from. It is so different from the smooth Bristol that I usually use for colored pencil. This drawing took me about 3 hours maybe (just because it isn't very detailed), but I imagine I will have to start drawing much smaller if I want to finish 30 of these!!

  4. Wow! What a wonderful creation. I love colored pencil, too, but also wouldn't be able to finish such a large piece in such a short time. I will be looking forward to seeing your posts...enjoy the challenge!

    1. Thank you so much. Yeah I've decided I will need to draw much smaller during the week if I want to finish this challenge! Not allowing myself to detail very much will also help with time I hope. I love your scribbly colored pencil landscape drawings!

  5. Aw, I love the nose! I was scrolling through the posts on Leslie's blog just looking for a little 30/30 logo to put on my blog, but the thumbnail of this stopped me in my tracks and I had to come and look. Beautiful :)

    1. Thank you for the sweet comment. I really had to reference the nose pretty heavily. I questioned each wrinkle because it looked all wrong until I was finished.
